Argos Advert Song, Christmas – The Book of Dreams

Titled ‘The Book of Dreams’, this drum-themed Christmas TV advert for Argos sees a father and daughter drumming duo breathe new life into Simple Minds biggest hit song ‘Don’t You (Forget About Me)’.

In what we consider to be the retailer’s best seasonal ad campaign to date, the video opens with a guy looking through The Book of Dreams Argos gift guide catalogue.

There he comes across a drum kit that his daughter has highlighted for her Christmas present, but there’s no need on this occasion to order the item as it conveniently turns out there’s already a set under the table.

As the guy begins playing the drums, the Don’t You Forget About Me music video appears on the television and the kitchen transforms into a concert stage. The oven lights up, cupboards turn into speakers and the freezer acts as a dry ice machine. A toy teddy bear also takes this opportunity to enjoy a little crowd surfing.

All this understandably wakes up his daughter, played by actress Nandi Bushell, who walks down the stairs to take her place at a second drum kit for a duet in front of a cheering crowd.

As you’ve probably gathered by now, the Argos Christmas advert song is ‘Don’t You (Forget About Me)’ which was released back in 1985 by post-punk Glasgow rock band Simple Minds. The guy you see singing and dancing in the tracks music video is the band’s frontman Jim Kerr.

Featuring the lyrics “As you walk on by, will you call my name?” and lots of “Lala la la, lala la la”, the song was written and composed by Keith Forsey and Steve Schiff for the soundtrack to American comedy-drama film The Breakfast Club and was a number 1 hit on the UK charts.
