What’s the name of the song that Elton John is singing in this John Lewis Christmas advert?
For any of you younger viewers new to the music of Sir Elton John, the track featured in this year’s festive John Lewis ad (below) is simply called Your Song. The English singer and musician recorded this song back in 1970 and included it on his self-titled second album. The lyrics, which include “I hope you don’t mind, that I put down in words. How wonderful life is, now you’re in the world”, were written by Elton’s now longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin. You can download the full single from Amazon UK and iTunes.
The original single’s release made it to number 7 here on the UK charts and number 9 in America. The track was then covered in 2010 by singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding and more recently by American pop star Lady Gaga for her tribute album Revamp: Reimagining the Songs of Elton John & Bernie Taupin. No doubt the launch of this new John Lewis Christmas TV advert will see a big increase in sales and downloads of Elton’s long list of hit singles and albums, with Your Song likely to reenter the charts.
