Titled ‘Infamous Since 1864’, this 2019 to 2021 ‘Shimmy Ya’ Smirnoff commercial plays like a mini spy movie as we watch bottles of the vodka being passed covertly from person to person.
Launched in the Autumn, this ad spot tells ‘The Secret Story of Smirnoff’, showing a man fleeing with a bottle on a train from Russia. From there the vodka is hidden in America, exiled in France, and traded in secret before it has infiltrated Hollywood. According to the advert though, its current whereabouts are known.
The Smirnoff commercial song that we hear playing in the background of this video appears to be a cover of the track ‘Shimmy Shimmy Ya’ that was originally recorded by American rapper Ol’ Dirty Bastard and produced by fellow Wu-Tang Clan member RZA.
The version featured in this ad includes vocals by a female rapper, but we so far haven’t identified them for certain. We’ll update this page once we can bring you more details. Featuring the lyrics “Ooh, baby, I like it raw”, the Ol’ Dirty Bastard original appears on the artist’s 1995 solo debut album ‘Return to the 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version’.
